My name is Elke Kozma , and I am writing from Austria.I am researching the life of my grandfather, who served with the U.S. Army in Salzburg during the American occupation of Austria in 1948–1949.
The information I have is:
• Charles (possibly Carl/Karl) William Sherwood
• Born: October 10, 1927, Atlanta, Georgia
• Later served in the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division
• Killed in action in Korea on February 15, 1951
• Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously.
My father was born in Salzburg in January 1949, so I know my grandfather was serving with the U.S. Army in Salzburg during that period.
Unfortunately, I do not know which unit he belonged to before being sent to Korea.
I understand that your organization has preserved publications and historical material relating to the United States Forces in Austria.
I would be very grateful if you could advise whether the name Charles (or Carl/Karl) William Sherwood appears in any USFA publications, unit histories, newsletters, photographs, or other records from 1948–1949, or whether you could suggest another archive that may hold personnel or unit information for U.S. soldiers stationed in Salzburg.
